Plastic drums are bulk containers manufactured primarily from raw materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) through blow molding and injection molding processes. They are primarily utilized for the packaging and transport of liquid and solid goods across various sectors, including the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.
Plastic drum specifications range from 0.25 liters to 220 liters; their seamless design is engineered to meet the packaging requirements for hazardous materials. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) drums are generally capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -40°C to 60°C. These containers feature lightweight construction as well as moisture-resistant and corrosion-resistant properties; furthermore, the use of non-toxic HDPE materials ensures compliance with food packaging standards.

While they are suitable for storing chemicals containing acids, alkalis, and oils, they are strictly prohibited from holding highly volatile substances such as fuming sulfuric acid or liquid ammonia. Standard plastic drums should not be used to store flammable liquids such as gasoline; specifically, the use of insulating containers-such as plastic drums-for storing flammable liquids is strictly forbidden. Additionally, the improper mixing of contents-such as using a plastic drum that previously held hydrochloric acid to store hydrogen peroxide-is strictly prohibited. In practical usage scenarios, idle plastic drums must undergo proper handling procedures: after draining any accumulated water, they should be stored upside down or kept sealed with their lids securely fastened.
In June 2025, two national standards were officially released and implemented: GB/T 45451.1-2025, *Packaging Plastic Drums-Part 1: Removable-Head (Open-Top) Drums with Nominal Capacities of 113.6 L to 220 L*, and GB/T 45451.2-2025, *Packaging Plastic Drums-Part 2: Non-Removable-Head (Closed-Top) Drums with Nominal Capacities of 208.2 L to 220 L*. These standards establish regulatory guidelines for key technical parameters regarding large-capacity plastic drums, including nominal capacity, dimensional tolerances, closure mechanisms, and residual liquid levels. Furthermore, the industry has secured relevant patents in areas such as leak-proof structural designs and pneumatic capping devices.
